Maggie

Maggie

01/30/11
You remember Maggie... she’s the beauty on the far left... before her ulcerated cornea. She came to us a couple of years ago as an owner surrender. I fostered her for several months and a wonderful family in Royal Oak adopted her. They had 2 small boys and Maggie just adored them!
Unfortunately Maggie’s new family had a 3rd. baby and did not feel that had the time to love and spoil her as she deserved to be. She was surrendered back to MMPC this fall.
Maggie had a difficult time when she came back into foster care. She was confused and really missed her family. Enough time has passed and she has since adjusted. She is even becoming playful in her new foster home.
A little over a week ago Maggie’s foster mom noticed that one of her eye was very bloodshot and looked bad. She took her to the vet and we learned that she had an ulcerated cornea. This can be very serious for a pug and she was put on antibiotic eye drops. We thought the eye was looking a little better but when she went back a few days later for another check up, we found that it was actually worse and surgery was needed to try and save the eye!

She had surgery the very next day and below is the update from her foster mom:

*** 01/26/11 - I picked Maggie up from surgery at 5 this evening. She seems to be doing okay. She ate like a little piggy!! I had to hand feed her because she couldn't figure out how to get the food with the cone on. She is getting a chicken, chicken liver, barley, broccoli, carrots and egg mixture, so it was quite messy. She is on two antibiotic eye drops 4 times a day, an oral antibiotic once a day, prednisone once a day and a pain med twice a day. Her eye looks horrible. In fact, you can’t even see eye at all. It is just this ugly bruised bloody looking thing inside her eyelid. It is forming a living bandage over the cornea to hopefully keep the eye from rupturing as well as providing a blood supply to the area to help it heal. It will hopefully stay covered for at least two weeks and ideally a whole month, and until then we won't know what is even happening to the eye. The vet will check it weekly, but that is just to be sure that the sutures are holding and it is staying covered. ***

WOW… poor Mags!!!!!!!!!!!! We are all so worried!! Hopefully the surgery was successful and her eye won’t rupture!! I can’t even imagine the pain that would cause!! Please keep Maggie in your heart to see her through this very difficult time. Her surgery was very expensive and any donations are greatly appreciated too!!
